Authentication Research

  • For works of art where the provenance is not entirely clear, and where the dollar value may be high, it is advisable to have an authentication on record.

  • Only a recognized expert, committee or foundation dedicated to a particular artist, is authorized to verify the authenticity of works created by that artist. AFAA does not represent itself as a recognized authority on any artist. However, we do maintain longstanding professional relationships with many experts and understand their process and requirements.

  • Our objective is to present the appropriate expert with a detailed fact sheet on your artwork that supports its presumed authenticity. This frequently involves research in specialist collections, archives and databases on your behalf.

  • Providing the relevant data on your item before submission to the expert is often pivotal to a positive outcome. If the expert requests to personally examine the work, we can also assist with logistics.
